山姆·尼尔出生于英国北爱尔兰，8岁时全家移民新西兰，求学时代在英国坎特布里大学主修英国文学，毕业后随“五人巡回剧团”做了一年表演。70年代初往影坛发展，并加入新西兰影片制作公司，边演边导，在剪接方面也有涉猎。1979年在成名作《我的璀璨生涯》推出后，他又往英国发展，曾当选1983年英国电视最佳男演员。1992年随着《侏罗纪公园》卖座及《钢琴师和她的情人》扬威戛纳，使他的声势也跟着水涨船高。2001年他再度以同一角色演出《侏罗纪公园3》。
